The MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Willies Mchunu today officially opened the D96 road in Newcastle under the Amajuba District Municipality. This road was built in partnership with the Vulintaba Property Developers who pumped more than R250 million into the road upgrade. In addition Vulintaba Property Developers also spent R55 million in the building of D96.
This road leads to a new housing estate development that will feature a newly built R50 million hotel that is set to create hundreds of jobs for the local people. The nearby community of Glencalder and Normandien under Ingwe Tribal Authority will also benefit from this road infrastructure.
Furthermore, the Department of Transport will build sidewalks and the inclusion of public transport facilities which will ease movement of commuting local residents to their place of employment and other important socio-economic amenities.
The developers will also spend R65 million in the upcoming years on further infrastructure improvements on the road. MEC Mchunu welcomed this public-private partnership with the Vulintaba Property Developers, saying such an initiative will help the country reach its economic growth potential.
"The issue of development is important for all of us as South Africans. I am pleased when I see private businesses partnering with government to bring about development for our people. As government we want to see people like yourselves who have the ability to come together and partner with us as we change the face of South Africa and improve the lives of citizens," said Mchunu.
