KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr. Willies Mchunu, has strongly condemned yesterday's killing of a taxi operator in Isiphingo.
Preliminary reports have revealed that at approximately 8h00 am yesterday (9 January 2014) Mr. Mzovele Cele was on his way to collect his daily taxi collection money when unknown assailants gunned him down. Cele died on the scene.
Mchunu has sent his condolences to Cele's family and friends. He has also ordered a full investigation into the matter, which will also establish whether there is a link between Cele’s death and taxi violence.
"It is shocking that a person can be killed in such a barbaric manner. The police revealed that 16 cartridges were found on the scene, which suggests that the killers were heavily armed and their sordid act was premeditated. We will work with KZN South African National Taxi Council to find answers. We also urge community members who might have any information to work with the police to ensure that perpetrators are brought to book with speed," said Mchunu.
