KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Willies Mchunu, has welcomed the increased vigilance of the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) who this weekend arrested more than 21 motorists for speeding on provincial roads.
In welcoming these arrests, MEC Mchunu said he was convinced that this would send a clear message to all motorists that those who transgressed road regulations would face the full might of the law.
The RTI weekend’s report indicates that the highest speedster was nabbed yesterday (Sunday, 22 September 2013) driving at 201 km/h on the N2 near Ballito in a zone of 120 km/h. The driver was arrested and taken to Groutville SAPS and released on a R3 000 bail.
A driver of a motorbike was also arrested yesterday on the N2, Sezela when he was caught driving at 212 km/h. He was released on a R3 000 bail. Mchunu condemned these errant motorists and called on road users to adhere to the speed limits on our roads.
“I applaud our traffic officers for ensuring that all transgressors are brought to book. The high visibility of our traffic law enforcement will continue to be the order of the day as part of maximising law enforcement on our roads. This will send a strong message to all road users that non-compliance to traffic rules will never be overlooked and will not be compromised. Research has shown that over speeding is one of the major contributors to road fatalities,” said Mchunu.
