KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Willies Mchunu noted with concern the damning report on eThekwini metro police

KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Willies Mchunu has noted with concern a forensic report alleging that 30 eThekwini metro police resorted to fraudulent exercise by buying drivers licences.

The report reveals that some instructors within the Metro police units referred these trainees to an illegal driving school to facilitate fraudulent processes in order to obtain drivers licences. The 30 metro police officers are currently employed by the municipality and the matter is now being investigated by the Hawks.

Mchunu expressed shocked that people who are entrusted to uphold and enforce the law would resort to such unlawful and unacceptable conduct.

“Corrupt and fraudulent activities in obtaining drivers licences cannot be tolerated. We welcome the report however we will study it with a view of engaging the municipality on actions to be taken. Fraud in buying licences is a contributing factor to fatalities we experience on our roads. As we are prioritizing road safety, traffic officers at all levels are our frontline soldiers dedicated to fighting transgressions. If these allegations were to be proven true, tough action must be taken against these traffic officers.

Last year we meet with all driving school owners in KwaZulu-Natal and they made a commitment to root out corrupt activities in their field. We will hold them accountable. We appeal to all people of KwaZulu-Natal to subject themselves to proper, legal processes in obtaining drivers licences not shortcuts. It is also unacceptable that some of the metro police officers are taxi owners and contravening policies of this government. Action needs to be taken against them,” said Mchunu.
