KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Willies Mchunu shocked by the deaths of a mother and two children in a fire

KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Willies Mchunu has learnt with great shock of the deaths of a mother and two children in a fire in Mbitane outside KwaMaphumulo. It is alleged that yesterday, 30 January 2012, at about 13h30 police were alerted of a fire in the area. Upon arriving they discovered that the house had burnt down.

Three bodies were recovered and they are believed to be of a five year old, an eight year old and their 48 year old mother. A male sustained injuries and was taken to eMphumulo hospital.

The motive of the killing has not been established and no arrests have been made. Mchunu expressed his deepest condolences to the family of the deceased. “I am shocked to hear that people have died such traumatic deaths. The police will work hard to get to the bottom of this. I want to appeal to the community to work with the police if they have any information regarding this incident. I would like to send my condolences to the relatives of the victims and wish a speedy recovery to the survivor in hospital”, said Mchunu.
