KwaZulu-Natal MEC Senzo Mchunu on the department position on school trips

As a department we have noted with concern the misinterpretation and confusion resulting from the statement that we sent regarding school trips. The interpretation that as a department we have applied a blanket ban of all school trips could not be further from the truth – that is not our position.

Our position as a department is that we cannot sit back and fold arms while we are losing our learners in alarmingly high numbers. We have therefore decided to take a position that every school that wants to embark on an excursion must ensure that it seeks permission from the Head of Department and ensures that all safety regulations are strictly adhered to.

Among other things that the school must thoroughly check when going on a trip, is whether or not the transport company is reputable, the transport is in good condition and the driver has a driving license. What we are therefore saying is that every school trip must be known by the department and the Head of Department must use his discretion in determining whether or not a school should embark on a trip.

The interpretation that there is a blanket suspension of school trips is unfortunate and we want to put it on record that as a department that is not our position.
