The MEC for Education in KwaZulu-Natal, Senzo Mchunu and the Provincial MEC for Transport, Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu, would like convey their heartfelt condolences to families, educators and fellow learners of nine learners from Okhombe Primary School in Bergville who got killed during a mini bus accident yesterday, 15 September 2012.
The nine learners got killed when a minibus they were travelling in, tried to avoid a cow that was crossing the road and strayed into a river. One learner is still not found and six learners were admitted at Ladysmith Hospital.
"As a Department of Education in KwaZulu-Natal we have received with shock the sad news of the passing away of these learners. In less than a Month, as a department we have lost more than 25 learners due to road accidents. First it was in Bulwer where we lost 10 learners, just last week we were burying seven learners from Ugu District who also died in a tragic bus accident and now it is these learners from Ukhombe Primary School. Our prayers are with the families of these children and those who are in hospital," said MEC Senzo Mchunu.
The MEC for Transport, Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu, also expressed his shock upon hearing about the accident. "As a province we have lost many lives recently due to road accidents involving learners. During the Month of October, we are going to launch Transport Month and we are going to pay particular attention to vehicles transporting learners," said Willies Mchunu.
