KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation Ntombikayise Sibhidla-Saphetha and eThekwini Mayor call for AFCON support

KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation Ntombikayise Sibhidla-Saphetha and Ethekwini Mayor James Nxumalo led an Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) activation and mass mobilisation drive on January 16 to encourage people of KwaZulu-Natal to buy tickets and support Bafana Bafana during the tournament.

Boarding a train at Tongaat central station to Moses Mabhida, Sibhidla-Saphetha and Nxumalo interacted with passengers, explaining the importance of supporting the South African national soccer team and helping to make sure that the country hosts a successful tournament which starts on the 19th of January to the 10th February.

"We are confident of hosting a successful event. We are calling on our people to come and enjoy the games and fill the Moses Mabhida stadium to capacity," said Sibhidla-Saphetha. She reminded the public that when Bafana Bafana won the tournament in 1996, they were led by a coach from KZN, Clive Barker and suggested history may repeat itself with another KZN coach, Gordon Igesund at the helm. "We are convinced that our support for the national team will go a long way in boosting the players’ confidence and we believe they are going to make us proud," said Sibhidla-Saphetha.
