KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation, Mrs Ntombikayise Sibhidla-Saphetha congratulates the newly crowned WBF Champion, George Mdluli. The 29 year old boxer from Umhlabuyalingana beat Johannes Salie over the weekend in Cape Town. Before the fight, Mdluli was ranked number nine on the Boxing South Africa’s Official Ratings, but now he is number three.
Elated Sibhidla-Saphetha said that this was a great achievement for KwaZulu-Natal.
“Mdluli is the first boxer in the province in his division to win this title. His victory augurs well for KwaZulu-Natal’s efforts to revive boxing in the province. Currently, we are negotiating a partnership with the KZN Boxing Federation that will see the department supporting both the amateur and professional boxers. The department has also started a programme to hand over boxing equipment to various boxing clubs in the province so that our boxers can receive quality training,” she said.
