KwaZulu-Natal Legislature MPLs embark on Mandela Day activities

Members of the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature under the leadership of provincial Speaker Honourable Lydia Johnson will be deployed in various parts of the province as part of the Mandela Day Clean-Up Campaign.

Nelson Mandela Day is an annual international day in honour of our late former President Nelson Mandela. It is celebrated on the 18th of July (Mandela's birthday). The day is inspired by the 67 years Mandela spent serving humanity but volunteers are requested to start with 67 minutes of their time to serve others.

The legislature's campaign is in direct response to the call made by President Jacob Zuma last month when he delivered the State of the Nation Address in Cape Town. The legislature's campaign will include both rural and urban areas that have become an eyesore because of dirt ingrained in the surfaces of these smaller rural towns and cities.

The campaign will start at Bilanyoni in the Zululand District Municipality and move to Pomeroy in Umsinga under Umzinyathi District Municipality and end up in Pietermaritzburg's Umsunduzi Municipality where MPLs will join the provincial government campaign for the Mandela Day.

Johnson said this campaign will not only involve physical cleaning of the targeted areas but will also serve as an educational campaign for people to love and respect the environment where they live.

"It is important for us to keep areas where we live both urban and rural, clean and also to pass this culture to the coming generations because clean and green cities will have an enormous contribution to our lives. It is partly because of these reasons that we are therefore heeding the President's call for cleaning our places this forthcoming Mandela Day," said Johnson.

The campaign will start at Dumbe Municipality on the 16th of July. MPLs will meet for a briefing at Paul-Pietersburg Police Station at 10am before moving to Ward 4 where the actual cleaning will take place.

They will then move to Pomeroy in Msinga where they will meet for a briefing on the 17th of July 2014 before moving to ward 17 in Pomeroy where the actual cleaning will take place.

MPLs will return to Pietermaritzburg for the provincial government event which will be taking place in Pietermaritzburg on the 18th of July.
