KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu is astonished by the brutal murder of a young woman who was killed and dumped at the local school at uMlazi, Durban.
The body of Sthembile Sibiya was found by the residence of uMlazi J-section yesterday, dumped at Isidingo Combine School. According to the police, the deceased was stabbed and had multiple wounds, however there is nothing suggesting that the crime was committed on the scene.
It also emerged that there are strong indications that the victim was raped before being killed and police have assured a thorough investigation will be conducted. After hearing about this shocking and senseless killing, Mchunu assigned a team of officials from the Department of Community Safety and Liaison, to work with the police and the community to tackle the scourge of rape and woman abuse in the uMlazi area.
Acting on behalf of MEC Mchunu, the MEC for Health, Dr. Sibongiseni Dhlomo and this morning met with the police under uMlazi cluster before paying a visit to the Sibiya family at H sections.
Dhlomo strongly condemned the brutal murder of this young woman and assured the family that police have committed to work tirelessly looking for perpetrators of the ugly deed.
“MEC Mchunu and the Premier have asked me to come and share with you their pain and shock after learning of this incident. The brutality shown here is a clear indication that criminals are merciless and do not value human life. After engaging with the police management at this cluster, I am confident that perpetrators of this callous killing will soon be apprehended. As government we are very much concerned at the alarming rate of rape and killing of women in the province.
This is unacceptable and must come to an end. I appeal to anyone with information to assist the police. Our heartfelt condolences to this Sibiya family and as government we have assured our support during this difficult time,” said MEC Dhlomo.
