KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu has expressed great shock at the number of people who lost their lives over the past weekend.
Reports reveal that 12 people died across the KZN road during the past weekend. One major accident happened in Henly Dam, Edendale, where a bus collided with a car and left two people dead.
In another separate accident before the Market road off ramp, a truck overturned, leaving two people dead. On the N3 north bound three people lost their lives in an accident yesterday. In Estcourt, a light motor vehicle lost control and overturned on R103 leaving two people dead with one sustaining critical accidents.
On the north of Durban, at Inanda Dam, a bus carrying passengers lost control and overturned with scores of people sustaining serious injuries and were taken to various nearby hospitals. A total of 12 people were reported to have lost their lives during the weekend. Mchunu expressed shock at the devastating effects that accidents have on the society.
“This is quite alarming that we lost so many lives in just one weekend as the world prepares to have the United Nations Global Pedestrian Road Safety Week. This serves as an unfortunate remainder that more work needs to be done in order to curb the accidents on our roads. These accidents have adverse results as they impact on the economy as well as on individual households.
As a department we will strive to improve our road awareness campaigns by intensifying our efforts. We will not rest until we have zero deaths on our roads. I appeal to motorists to practice caution and to be vigilant at all times when they utilize the road. I would like to send my deepest condolences to the families who lost their loved ones”, said Mchunu.
