KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu applauds the good work by the police for the arrest of three suspect linked to the murder of Eshowe taxi operators. The suspects were arrested after collective efforts of police units as they raided Eshowe and surrounding areas.
Police also managed to recover an unlicensed firearm believed to be used in murdering Skhumbuzo Khanyile. It is alleged that on 8 April 2013 at approximately at 6h00 Khanyile was at his home at Nqoleni Area when the suspects allegedly shot and killed him. The suspects then fled the scene on foot towards the nearby bushes.
All three suspects are facing a case of murder and were today appearing at the Eshowe Magistrate court. Recently there has been a wave of killings in the taxi industry in various associations and Mchunu expressed confidence that this arrest will send a strong message to those perpetrating violence in the taxi industry.
The recent one is the killing of an innocent commuter in Ballito who was killed when assailants attacked and fired bullets recently.
“This is good news. Even though the motive for Khanyile’s killing is unknown, we however remain convinced that this will send a strong message to those fuelling violence in the taxi industry. I commend the police for the good work and I hope this will motivate them to work even harder. We want stability in the taxi industry and we will do all our best to restore order and dignity. I am confident that in all the remaining cases, police are working hard looking for suspects,” said Mchunu.
