KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Willies Mchunu sends condolences to the families of five road accident victims

KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu sends his condolences to the families of five people, who died after an accident outside Port Shepstone last night.

According to the report, a bakkie carrying people to the funeral lost control and overturned on R61, St Michaels Bridge. The occupants were reportedly from Durban and were heading to the Eastern Cape.

It is believed the driver lost control of the vehicle.Four people died on the scene and one died later in hospital. Four occupants are in a critical condition and seven sustained minor injuries.

Mchunu is saddened by this accident and has issued a strong warning to all road users to adhere to the rule of law.

“We are saddened by this accident. This comes after we have concluded our October Transport Month, where were launched serious campaigns aiming at reducing the scourge of road carnages in the province. As we have started in October, our traffic officers are going all out to ensure that transgressors are brought to book. As we are approaching the festive season, I appeal to all motorists to respect the rule of law and assist in reducing road deaths.

The Department of Transport in KwaZulu-Natal together with our stakeholders, we are committed in working hard to ensure a significant reduction of road accidents this coming festive season. I send my deepest condolences to the families who lost their loved ones during the weekend’s accidents,” said Mchunu.
