KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu shocked by killing of 5 people in Ngudwini

KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr. Willies Mchunu is shocked by the killing of five (5) people in Ngudwini, outside Mandeni.

According to police report, the incident took place in the area called eMankwanyaneni where local people were attending a traditional function yesterday afternoon. It is alleged that a group of armed men arrived at the traditional function and opened fire. Five (5) were confirmed death and seventeen (17) sustained injuries and were taken to the local hospital.

Police deployment has been increased in the area to monitor the situation and to ensure stability. The area of Gudwini has in the past been engulfed by faction fights that have left many people dead.

The Department of Community Safety and Liaison has made number of interventions in the area to ensure peace there.

Mchunu expressed concern on the killings but vowed that perpetrators will soon be brought to book.

“We are deeply concern by these killings. This is senseless and creates unnecessary instability in the community. Police have assured us that they are monitoring the situation very closely. We appeal to them to work day and night to find perpetrators of this crime. We are confident that soon police will make a breakthrough. We appeal for calm in the community as we doing our best to get to the bottom of this matter. I also want to send my condolences to the families who lost their members and wish a speedy recovery to those who are hospitalized,” said Mchunu.

Tomorrow, 6 August 2012, Mchunu will convene an urgent meeting to engage with the community and stakeholders in the area of Ngudwini.
