Kwazulu-Natal (KZN) MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr Willies Mchunu mourns the killing of a leading Durban crime-fighter

Kwazulu-Natal (KZN) MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr Willies Mchunu, has described the killing of a Durban crime-fighter, Mandla Nhlonzi, as a great loss in the fight against crime in the province. Nhlonzi, a leading activist against crime in Durban, was stabbed to death this week on M13 near Westville in a suspected botched hijacking.

He was employed by eThekwini Municipality in the Safer Cities Department which is responsible for promoting safety in the Greater Durban area. As DJ with Vibe FM, Nhlonzi also promoted the campaign again crime. Nhlonzi has been active in many crime fighting campaigns, including working with the Community Policing Forums in the Upper Highway area.

Mchunu said yesterday he was devastated at the barbaric killing of this crime-fighting activist and described his death as a loss and a great setback.

“We condemn this brutal murder of Nhlonzi. He was one of the few people who appreciated and understood our approach that communities should play a significant role in fighting crime. To us his murder is a serious set-back and he will be greatly missed. We are, however, convinced that his killers would be brought to book soon,” said Mchunu.

Mchunu also sent his heartfelt condolences to the family of Nhlonzi, his friends and his colleagues at Vibe FM.
