KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Willies Mchunu visited families of victims who were hacked to death in Ndwedwe

KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Willies Mchunu has ordered police in Ndwedwe outside Tongaat to conduct regular raids to assess compliance of all the local taverns.

Mchunu was addressing family members of two women who were hacked to death by a relative on Saturday evening.

Yesterday Mchunu visited the area of Ndwedwe to ascertain what transpired when a man who is out on parole, allegedly attacked and killed his girlfriend and his grandmother. His mother who was trying to intervene when the fight started between the suspect and his girlfriend was also wounded. She is in a critical condition at the local hospital.

The suspect is also believed to have burnt three houses belonging to the relatives. Mchunu also visited the suspect’s mother in hospital and conveyed condolences on behalf of the government of KwaZulu-Natal.

MEC Mchunu condemns this gruesome killing of women and vowed that violence against women cannot be tolerated. He commended the police for swiftly arresting the suspect. The suspect was hospitalised after he collapsed and is now under police supervision.

“The suspect is making a mockery of the justice system and the parole process. He is out in parole and few days he is committing such a shocking crime. After meeting with the families, it was clear that the suspect is a notorious boy. I have instructed the police to conduct raids at all the local taverns to see if they are complying with their licences. It is clear that drug abuse is one of the major problems facing this community,” said Mchunu.
