KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Willies Mchunu is mourning the death of six family members who died in a gruesome accident on R603 Mbumbulu road, South of Durban.
Preliminary investigations reveal that a Mazda was trying to overtake and collided head-on with a tractor. It is believed the Mazda driver was overtaking when his car went underneath the tractor, instantly killing all six occupants.
All the six occupants are members of the Shange family in Mid Illovo and were travelling from Pietermaritzburg to Mid Illovo. The deceased include two children. Reacting to this tragic accident, MEC Mchunu expressed his deepest shock and announced that a full investigation into the accident has been instituted.
“I am very saddened by this horrific accident. Losing six members of one family in an accident is indeed tragic and unbelievable. We have initiated a full investigation into the cause of this gruesome accident. Clearly, one of the drivers failed to adhere to traffic rules.
This must be an important lesson that traffic rules must be adhered to all the time to save lives of innocent road users. I wish to send my deepest condolences to the Shange family for this tragic loss. As government we are going to work closely with the family during this difficult time,” said Mchunu.
Mchunu has assigned a team of senior officials to assist the Shange family. Mchunu is expected to visit the family tomorrow (further details including the time, will be communicated in due course).
