KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr Willies Mchunu commends police for a breakthrough after arresting more the 300 suspects for various incidents of crimes, including sexual offences.
As from the 5th to the 12 April 2013, police arrested 347 suspects for sexual related offences including kidnapping, assaults, domestic violence, sexual assault, robbery, abduction and rape cases in the province.
A total of 60 accused have been convicted by various courts in the province after they were found guilty of these sexual related offences. A total of 19 life term imprisonments were handed down to some of the convicted criminals. Others received jail terms ranging from two years to 25 years of imprisonment. It is gladly acknowledged that maximum sentences were handed down in most cases and that justice was delivered to the victims.
Mchunu expressed confidence on the work of the police and urge communities to report sexual related cases to the police.
“I commend the good work done by our police. I urge the community structures and the community at large to work very close with police to make sure that all perpetrators face the full might of the law. We cannot be spectators when woman and children are brutal murdered and raped. We can`t stand that each and every day our women and children are being abused. As communities we must unite and strongly voice our anger against the going abuse of woman and rape. Police are following all the leads on other cases that have been reported”, said Mchunu
