KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr. Willies Mchunu is shocked and saddened following the tragic death of the Mandeni Municipality speaker in a horrific crash.
Reports revealed that Mandeni speaker, Councillor Cebolenkosi Mfekayi and the personal assistant to the mayor of Mandeni, Siyabonga Mbelu, died on the N3, at Zinkwazi yesterday. A third occupant in the car, Cllr Nhlakanipho Msomi survived and is in a critical condition at the local hospital.
The reports also revealed that a Hyundai lost control and caught alight. The speaker and the mayor’s PA were burnt beyond recognition. Mchunu described this accident as a tragedy that has robbed the people of Mandeni of young leaders with the potential of developing the area.
“Losing young people with such huge potential is a tragedy. These are young leaders who were determined to change the lives of the people and to make meaningful contributions in the province. I was shocked after getting the report of this accident. This accident is proving once again that road crashes are depriving such people who can make huge contributions in our communities. I urge all sectors of our society to unite and actively participate in the fight against the scourge of road carnage. I would like to send my condolences to the families of the two who lost their lives and wish a speedy recovery to Cllr Msomi who is still hospital,” said Mchunu.
Mchunu also cautioned motorists to drive carefully in this rainy weather. Weather services have predicted that it will continue to rain for the next few days.
