KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr. Willies Mchunu warns all motorists to drive cautiously in this bad weather

KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr. Willies Mchunu is giving a stern warning to all motorists to drive cautiously in this rainy and snowy weather. Motorists are urged to adjust their driving habits to suit the prevailing weather conditions. The recent rains, coupled with snow have resulted in several road closures and accidents across the province, which have been a huge inconvenience for other road users. Weather reports have shown that the cold conditions will persist for the remainder of the week.

Mist, at times with zero visibility and slippery roads, is currently being experienced throughout the province and is creating inconvenience. Speed limits must be drastically reduced and motorists should ensure that prior to travelling, their head lamps, brake lights, rear lights and windscreen wipers are fully functional. More importantly, they should ensure that the de-mister is working, to ensure visibility and also keep a safe following distance.

Mchunu urges all motorists and people of KZN to postpone their trips until the weather is clear. He also assured those who are trapped in the snow and stranded on the road that government is doing all possible means to assist them.

“I appeal to motorists to drive carefully in this bad weather conditions. The roads are slippery so please reduce your speed and keep a safe following distance. It is regrettable that we have been receiving a number of accidents happening on our roads. We therefore appeal to motorists to consider the weather conditions and adjust their driving habits. We are doing all we can to assist those who are trapped in the snow. We have dispatched graders to clear away the snow in the affected areas. The South African National Defence Force is also on board rescuing those who are stranded,” said Mchunu.
