KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Willies Mchunu shocked to hear the recent spate of accidents that have gripped KZN

KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Willies Mchunu has been alarmed at the recent spate of accidents that have gripped KZN recently.

Earlier today, 12 March 2012 another accident claimed the lives of 11 people in Mzimkhulu. It is alleged that a truck and a Toyota Venture collided head-on, on the R56 leaving eleven people dead which included two females and nine males.

In one accident that happened yesterday, 11 March 2012 on the R66 in Pietermaritzburg, six people died in a three car collision after returning from a picnic in Albert falls. Among the deceased were a six month infant and its parents.

Mchunu expressed his deepest shock at these accidents days before the launch of the Easter holiday campaign “This is a total shock to hear that so many people have died in a matter of hours. These accidents happened just when we were getting ready to launch our Easter campaign, Operation Val’ingozi on Tuesday, 13 March 2012.

These accidents are unnecessary and can be prevented if people stick to the rules of the road. I urge all motorists to practice caution when driving since the province is experiencing rainy weather recently. Please ensure that your vehicles are in a road worthy condition. Please have your head lights on and keep a safe driving distance. I would like to send my condolences to the families who lost their loved ones in the accident and wish those in hospital a speedy recovery”, said Mchunu
