Two learners from Tugela Secondary School in the Ilembe District, represented South Africa in the International Children’s Conference in Burundi. Ncomi Lukhele (Grade12) and Sesuli Mthethwa (Grade 9), who are members of Girls & Boys Education Movement (G/BEM) were selected by the Department of Basic Education to represent the country.
The two left for Bujumbura in Burundi on 29 May 2014 and came back on the 3rd of June 2014. The conference called the Children’s Forum of Hope, tackled issues like bullying at school, violence at home and in the community as well as wars affecting different countries.
Because of her eloquence, Ncomi was chosen to be the spokesperson of all English speaking countries who attended the conference. Recently she was the Premiers special guest during the State of the Province Address. The G/BEM in Tugela Secondary, are the 2013 national champions and they have tangible evidence of turning the school around in terms of late coming, absenteeism and teenage pregnancy.
“I am very proud of these two young girls, they have made the country and the Province of KwaZulu-Natal proud,” said MEC Nkonyeni.
