KwaZulu-Natal Government on launch of 20 years of freedom celebrations

KwaZulu-Natal launches 20 years of freedom celebrations

Indeed our province has a good story to tell in changing the lives of millions of its residents in the last two decades. The provincial residents have been called upon to embrace one another in honour of the legacy of the former president Nelson Mandela.

This call was made by the Premier of province Senzo Mchunu during the launch of the provincial 20 years of freedom celebrations on 10 March. The launch held at the iconic and historical Nelson Mandela Capture site in Howick, within Umngeni Municipal area, was attended by the general public, the Provincial Executive, Members of the Provincial Legislature, Mayors from both District and Local Municipalities.

Addressing thousands of people who attended the auspicious event, Premier Mchunu said “the road that we have travelled as a province and country has been a bumpy one, but we are thankful that our province and country today, is a far better place to live in when compared to the dark days of apartheid”.

During the launch, a commemorative torch was ignited by the Premier together with his executive members. The torch will travel to all the district municipalities in the province, and a range of celebrations and festivities are planned as the torch makes its way through the province.

The torch according to MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube, is a very significant symbol of how far we have come as a province and country. “The human spirit is like a fire that can never be extinguished even in the face of huge adversities as we have seen in our own country. This torch therefore represents that fighting spirit and that we have overcome darkness together as South Africans” said Dube-Ncube.
