KwaZulu-Natal Education Head of Department Dr Nkosinathi Sishi to attend a court appearance of a departmental official

The Head of the Department of Education in KwaZulu-Natal, Dr Nkosinathi Sishi, is going to attend a court appearance of a departmental official who was arrested for extortion and corruption last Friday.

The accused is alleged to have sent numerous threatening text messages and calls trying to extort nearly R100 000 from her victim. The victim, who is also an employee of department, had received a pay-out of R200 000 from the department and was assisted by the accused, Annette Mfeka, who works at eThekwini Service Centre.

After receiving numerous threats, the victim informed the MEC for Education in KwaZulu-Natal, Senzo Mchunu, who together with South African Police Services set a trap that led to the arrest on Friday.

About two months ago, MEC Senzo Mchunu issued a stern warning to all officials involved in corruption to refrain or face the consequences. This arrest signifies the department’s resolve of rooting out corruption within its ranks.

“I would like to reiterate the statement I made early this year that the net is fast closing down on all those officials who are involved in corrupt practices. We are going to leave no stone unturned in ensuring that we rid this department of all such unscrupulous and diabolical characters,” said MEC Mchunu.

The victim will appear at Ntuzuma Magistrate Court at 9h00 am on Monday, 13 August 2012. After the court appearance, the Head of Department is going to address the media on this matter.
