KwaZulu-Natal Education Education welcomes a stable learning Environment at uMkhumbane High School

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education welcomes the restoration of stability, normality and teaching and learning at UMkhumbane High School following a period of disruption that adversely affected the academic programme and the well-being of learners.

Today, 08 June 2026, the Department, led by the Head of Department, Mr. Nkosinathi Ngcobo, acting on behalf of the KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Education, Mr. Sipho Hlomuka, witnessed the return of twenty-two educators and the school principal, Mr. Ntokozo Ngobese, marking a significant milestone in the collective efforts to place the interests of learners above all other considerations.

The Department commends the School Governing Body, organised labour representatives, education stakeholders and the broader school community for demonstrating leadership, maturity and commitment in reaching an amicable resolution that prioritises the constitutional right of every learner to quality education.

The atmosphere at the school was characterised by optimism, relief and renewed hope as learners enthusiastically welcomed back their teachers. Classrooms that had previously been affected by uncertainty were once again filled with the energy and excitement of learners eager to resume their academic activities.

The return of educators was met with applause, warm embraces, and visible expressions of joy from learners who have longed for the restoration of normal teaching and learning.

Speaking during the visit, the Head of Department emphasised that schools must remain centres of excellence, stability and learning, insulated from conflict and focused on delivering educational outcomes.

"The education of our children cannot be compromised. We are encouraged by the spirit of cooperation displayed by all parties in resolving the challenges that confronted the school. This outcome demonstrates that constructive engagement and social dialogue remain the most effective tools in addressing disputes while safeguarding the future of our learners," said Mr. Ngcobo.

On behalf of the Provincial Government and the MEC for Education, Mr. Sipho Hlomuka, the Department extends its appreciation to parents, educators, learners, organised labour, the School Governing Body and community leaders for their patience and unwavering commitment to ensuring that teaching and learning return to normal.

The Department remains committed to supporting UMkhumbane High School as it embarks on a new chapter of unity, stability, and academic excellence. Every effort will now be directed towards recovering lost teaching time, strengthening learner support programmes, and ensuring that the school continues to fulfil its mandate of providing quality education to all learners.

The return of peace and order at UMkhumbane High School serves as a powerful reminder that when communities unite behind the common objective of educating children, sustainable solutions can be achieved, and the future of learners can be protected.
