On 22 May, 31 employees will graduate in a number of key delivery areas to ensure accessible, caring and high quality care service for the people of KwaZulu-Natal.
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health employs around 75 000 people in the various categories with a majority being in the frontline of care services, i.e. nurses, doctors, pharmacists, etc. The support staff comprise of administration, general workers and other support components in the department. In order to ensure that those who are in the cold face of care are supported in caring out their duties; the department entered into a collaborative partnership with the Department of Education’s Further Education and Training (FET) Colleges in the province.
“The purpose of the agreement with the FET colleges is to provide training programmes to our employees who are without formal qualifications relevant to their daily duties. The partnership is in line with the government’s call for all national and provincial departments to foster partnerships, regarding training and development matters, with the Higher Education Institutions, FET Colleges and private training providers. This partnership benefits all employees regardless of their work stations. Our staff in areas such as Mseleni, Bergville, UMzimkhulu and Nongoma, are registered in their nearest FET colleges for various skills based courses,” says the Head of Department (HOD), Dr Sibongile Zungu.
Thirty one (31) employees from the administration and clerical work categories will be graduating on the 22 May 2010 at Umgungundlovu FET College, Northdale campus, in areas such as Financial Management, Human Resource Management, Public Management and Public Relations. Seventeen other employees graduated in 2009 with the same college, some of them received best academic performance awards. The graduates, based at the department’s head office, are involved in providing strategic support to delivery institutions in the province.
“We believe this will promote administration efficiency and effectiveness and improve health care service delivery,” added the HOD.
