KZN COGTA intervenes to assist disaster-stricken Loskop community

The KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) is attending to the disaster-stricken community of Loskop in northern KZN where a storm caused serious damage and claimed a life over the weekend.

Last night’s storms wreaked havoc in the area of Loskop under Imbabazane Municipality near Escourt. Preliminary reports indicate that more than sixty (60) houses were destroyed, 11 people injured and an elderly woman lost her life when after being struck by lightning the house also collapsed on her.

Disaster Management teams have been deployed to the area to assist with emergency relief.

"Our heartfelt condolences go to the family of an elderly resident who lost her life amid the storm that also injured 11 other people. We assure the community of Loskop that assistance is on its way," said KZN MEC for Cogta Nomusa Dube-Ncube.

The KZN Cogta has dispatched a disaster management team to the area to fully assess the damage and distribute material assistance to the affected community whose immediate needs will be attended to by the Provincial Government.

"It is unfortunate that a storm should cause so much suffering and damage even as the province battles a severe drought which has necessitated the declaration of multiple disaster areas across KZN by the provincial cabinet just last week," said Dube-Ncube.

The KZN Cogta's multi-skilled disaster management team remains on high alert to arrest potential damage from the unpredictable weather conditions that continue to wreak havoc in many communities across the province.
