KwaZulu-Natal Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs announces mass funeral for victims of Nongoma lightning disaster
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) has announced that the nine people who died last Saturday during the deadly lightning strike at Nongoma will be laid to rest in a mass funeral this Saturday.
“All affected families have been duly approached and all of them have welcomed the support from the provincial government. What happened in Nongoma last Saturday has tested our capacity to deal with natural disasters and we have emerged stronger from the experience,” said KZN Cogta MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube.
The mass funeral will take place on Saturday 21 February 2015 at Ngengeni Primary School grounds in Mthonjaneni. The proceedings will start at 8:30am. The provincial government will be represented at the funeral.
“The KZN Cogta dispatched its dedicated staff to the scene of the disaster moments after the lightning strike and we did all we could to offer both instant and long-term disaster relief to the affected families and the entire community," said Dube-Ncube.
The KZN Cogta's disaster management teams remain on high alert as storms continue to lash the province with increasing intensity, wreaking havoc in communities.
"We assure the public that they are not facing these natural disasters without a helping hand from the provincial government. Our expert teams are working round the clock to assist the affected individuals and families," said Dube-Ncube.
