Ladysmith floods update: Search and rescue teams recovers four bodies of people who had been missing after devastating floods
The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Disaster Management Centre confirms that our search and rescue teams have discovered the remains of four people in Ladysmith, who tragically lost their lives during the devastating floods on Sunday.
The team with South African Police Service are currently in the process of identifying the bodies, together with the families of those that were reported missing. This discovery brings the death toll from the Ladysmith flood disaster to 10 people with 6 still unaccounted for.
MEC for KZN Cogta, Bongiwe Sithole-Moloi, extends her deepest condolences to the grieving families. In response to this heart-wrenching tragedy, the government is committed to providing support, including counselling and assistance with burial arrangements, to all affected families.
Efforts to discover the missing people were intensified on Thursday through the deployment of additional resources from neighbouring provinces. MEC Sithole-Moloi expresses her gratitude to the dedicated search and rescue team led by the SAPS K9 Unit, that is working with PSS Medical Rescue, the AL-Imdaad Foundation for Disaster, and the South African Red Cross.
