Severe Weather Warning Issued for northern KZN Cogta: Disaster Management Teams on Standby

Affected Areas: Abaqulusi, eDumbe, eMadlangeni, Nguthu, Ulundi, uPhongolo

The South African Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning (level 2) for today  affecting the northern parts of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), specifically targeting areas including Abaqulusi, eDumbe, eMadlangeni, Nquthu, Ulundi, and uPhongolo.

 In response, the department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) under the leadership of MEC Bongiwe Sithole-Moloi has activated disaster management teams and placed them on standby.

The weather advisory anticipates severe thunderstorms with potential heavy downpours, hail, strong damaging winds, and excessive lightning over the mentioned regions.

Impact:

  • Potential localized damage to infrastructure, settlements, vehicles, livelihoods, and livestock.
  • Risk of localized flooding on susceptible roads.
  • Challenging driving conditions on dirt roads.
  • Minor motor vehicle accidents due to slippery roads and reduced visibility.

Disaster management teams have been activated and are on standby to respond swiftly to any emergencies. The department urges residents in the affected areas to stay informed and take necessary precautions.
