KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Acting MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo welcomes the arrest of two traffic officials in Melmoth for allegedly accepting bribes for issuing fraudulent licenses.
Yesterday, 10 July 2013 police arrested Thokozani Dladla who is a traffic examiner at Mthonjaneni Local Municipality. He is alleged to be part of a syndicate that has been issuing drivers licenses illegally at the Melmoth Testing Station. He briefly appealed in court today and was released on a R2 000 bail.
Today, 11 July 2013 a female traffic officer was also arrested for a similar offence. The female officer is believed to be employed by Umhlabuyalingana Local Municipality and is due to appear in court tomorrow, 12 July 2013.
“We welcome the intervention by members of the Hawks which uncovered this syndicate and led to the arrest of these suspects,” said Acting MEC Dr Dhlomo. This is a clear indication that as government we are serious about rooting out corrupt activities in our driving license testing centers.
Last year the Department of Transport in KwaZulu-Natal embarked on an audit exercise to ensure transparency in the process of issuing drivers licenses. These arrests will send a clear message to all those who are involved in nefarious activities that such will not be tolerated,” said Dhlomo.
