Joint Press Statement by the Ministry of Health South Africa, Ministry of Health Zimbabwe and the Moyo family pertaining to the death of Miss Zanele Moyo, daughter of the Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education in Zimbabwe

The Minister of Health in South Africa, Honourable Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, visited Zimbabwe on Thursday the 19th of November 2015 to meet with the family of Honourable Professor Jonathan Moyo, Zimbabwean Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education and the Minister of Health in Zimbabwe, Honourable Dr David Parirenyatwa, to discuss the puzzles around the unfortunate death of Miss Zanele Moyo, a student at the University of Cape Town in South Africa.

The issues discussed were pertaining to concerns surrounding the events of the investigation and the manner in which the post mortem was handled. After a thorough discussion the three parties agreed that since this matter involves two sovereign states and due to the problems and confusion encountered thus far, it was decided that the matter be elevated to the most senior ministerial levels in both governments.

It was also agreed that a process be set up between the Ministry of Health in South Africa and his Zimbabwean counterparts, with the help of relevant authorities and experts from both countries to expedite and take the matter to its finality.

This process will entail:

1. A review of the investigation and the progress made to date
2. Post mortem procedures and conclusions
3. The repatriation of the outstanding remains

The Ministers took this opportunity to express their deepest condolences from their respective governments to the Moyo Family and pledged to help as much as they can.
