Interventions to find long lasting peace and political stability at the KwaMashu hostel to continue

The multi-political party committee led by MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu will continue with peace interventions at the KwaMashu hostel until long lasting peace and political tolerance is achieved.

This emerged in a meeting of this forum of all political parties, government, police and the IEC held yesterday to reflect on the recent by-elections held in the province.

The meeting noted the KwaMashu ward 39 by-election as a success and applauds the people of KwaMashu for demonstrating political maturity tolerance.

KwaMashu by-election was a highly contested by-election engulfed with tensions and political instability. The meeting yesterday agreed on the need for the police to remain in the area until the situation is normalised. The multi-political party committee also commended the work done by various political parties calling for calm and tolerance, before, during and post elections.

“We congratulate the people of KwaMashu ward 39 for delivering peaceful, free and fair by-election. This is an indication that peace and political tolerance in this hostel is attainable. The multi-political party is pleased with the manner in which people of this area conducted themselves and we hope this will lay a solid ground for the future and peaceful co-existence,” said Mchunu.

The committee also noted the good work by the three aside committee comprises of African National Congress, Inkatha Freedom Party and NFP leaders.

This committee of local leaders at the hostel was set up by the multi-political party committee and was meeting every day before the elections to assess the situation and provide political leadership on the ground.

The multi-political party committee recommended that the three aside continue with its work to ensure on-going dialogue and political tolerance at the hostel.

Regarding the pending court case and bail application by NFP leaders, Mr Bhungu Gwala and his co-accused, the committee appealed to the community of KwaMashu to respect the court proceedings and respect any ruling by the court on this matter in future.
