Independent Electoral Commission on results of Municipal By-elections held on 17 July 2024

During the by-elections contested on 17 July 2024 in Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, and the North West provinces, the African National Congress retained three (3) seats and won another seat; while the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) won a seat (1).

The new ANC councillors are:

  • Zani Ngozi, in ward 07 Amahlathi Municipality – EC124, Eastern Cape. The ANC won a seat previously held by an independent candidate in the 2021 Municipal with 93,83% of the total votes cast, compared to 50,83% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout was 45,67%.
     
  • Sizeka Cynthia Matini, in ward 11 Amahlathi Municipality – EC124, Eastern Cape. The party retained the seat it won in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 84,91% of the total votes cast, compared to 80,97% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout was 29,37%.
     
  • Gabriel Mqikela, in ward 01 Matlosana Municipality – NW403, North West. The party retained the seat it won in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 85,74% of the total votes cast, compared to 71,49% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout was 37,29%.
     
  • Gloria Nozuko Tiyo, in ward 25 Matlosana Municipality – NW403, North West. The party retained the seat it won in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 83,14% of the total votes cast, compared to 72,46% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout was 32,85%.

    The new IFP councillors is:
     
  • Johan Bhekinkosi Zwane, in ward28 Newcastle Municipality – KZN252, KwaZulu-Natal. The IFP won a seat previously held by Team Sugar South Africa in the 2021 Municipal with 39,81% of the total votes cast, compared to 37,41% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout was 40,39%.
