Candidates contesting municipal by-elections on 7 August 2019

Twenty seven (27) municipal ward by-elections will take place in eight (8) provinces except the Western Cape on Wednesday, 7 August 2019.

The by-elections will be contested by hundred and five (105) candidates from fifteen (15) political parties and five (5) independent candidates. 

The details of the by-elections are as follows:

In the Eastern Cape:

  • Ward 12 in Makana Municipality – EC104 will be contested by three (3) candidates, Mzobanzi Nkwentsha from the African National Congress (ANC), Angela Peta Jones from the Democratic Alliance (DA) and Simphiwe Mbonda from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).

The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 39.82% and the DA candidate won the ward with 67.68% of valid votes

  • Ward 21 in Mnquma Municipality – EC122 will be contested by three (3) candidates, Goodman Tandikaya Ntshonga from the ANC, Nosipo Ellenjan Ntloko from the Congress of the People (COPE) and Nokubonga Sompali from the EFF

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s death.

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 52.80% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 52.80% of valid votes.

  • Ward 10 in Enoch Mgijima Municipality – EC139 will be contested by three (3) candidates, Anele Hala from the ANC, Hermanus Albertus Deysel from the DA and Siyabonga Anderson Magibile from the EFF.

The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 58.98% and the DA candidate won the ward with 60.57% of valid votes. Note that the voting stations’ in this ward will close earlier and will be open from 7 am to 7 pm.

In the Free State:

  • Ward 17 in Matjhabeng Municipality – FS184 will be contested by three (3) candidates, Thomas Mabaso from the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP), Nyaniso John Tshokotshela from the ANC and Akhona Dyantyi from the EFF.

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 54.47% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 83.89% of valid votes.

  • Ward 20 in Moqhaka Municipality – FS201 will be contested by three (3) candidates, Lehlohonolo Enoch Ramajoe from the ANC, Khotso Loot Maqelepo from the EFF, Maggy Lindiwe Mbona from the Power of Africans Unity (PAU).

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 49.68% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 86.98% of valid votes.

In Gauteng:

  • Ward 15 in Ekurhuleni Municipality – EKU will be contested by four (4) candidates, Mahlomola Phineas Momoti from the ANC, Amanda Davison from the DA, Thabang Given Matlala from the EFF and Barend Johannes Jordaan from the Vryheidsfront Plus (FF+).

The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 67.99% and the DA candidate won the ward with 87.37% of valid votes.

  • Ward 29 in Ekurhuleni Municipality – EKU will be contested by six (6) candidates, Imtiaz Ahmed Loonat from the ANC, Zaakirah Ismail from the DA, Francis Thulani Nontantla from the EFF, Senzo Bhekizitha Sithole from the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), Antony Thembinkosi Buthelezi from the National Freedom Party (NFP) and Nombulelo Patricia Zondo from the Pan Africanist Congress Of Azania (PAC)

The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 51.01% and the DA candidate won the ward with 43.65% of valid votes.

  • Ward 08 in Rand West City Municipality – GT485 will be contested by four (4) candidates, Paul Mathewis Claasen from the ACDP, Boy Reuben Van Der Merwe from the ANC, Nicolette Claudine Kiewietz from the DA and Anthony Johannes Thabapelo from the EFF.

The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 61.06% and the DA candidate won the ward with 46.05% of valid votes.

  • Ward 21 in Rand West City Municipality – GT485 will be contested by two (2) candidates, Abram Tholani Mazula from the ANC and Petunia Lebogang Ngozi from the EFF.

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 57.88% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 56.26% of valid votes.

In KwaZulu-Natal:

  • Ward 03 in eThekwini Municipality – ETH will be contested by five (5) candidates, Falakhe Obrien Gcabashe an independent candidate, Mpilenhle Eldridge Mkhize from the ANC, Zwelihle Gift Buthelezi from the African Transformation Movement (ATM), Goodman Sipho Mpungose from the EFF and Sibusiso Graduate Mkhize from the IFP.

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s death.

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 63.75% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 62.06% of valid votes.

  • Ward 27 in eThekwini Municipality – ETH will be contested by four (4) candidates, Johan Mhlanga from the ANC, Ernest Grenville Smith from the DA, Thulani Myeni from the EFF and Ahmed Ismail Vawda from the IFP.

The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 58.24% and the DA candidate won the ward with 77.10% of valid votes.

  • Ward 31 in eThekwini Municipality – ETH will be contested by six (6) candidates, Easlyn May Young from the ACDP, Zamokwakhe Cansus Mchunu from the ANC, Astrid Merle Fisher from the ATM, Charmaine Odette Clayton from the DA, Mlekeleli Lexen Doncabe from the EFF and Yaseen Adam from the IFP.

The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation .

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 58.70% and the DA candidate won the ward with 63.87% of valid votes.

  • Ward 35 in eThekwini Municipality – ETH will be contested by six (6) candidates, Meena Kisten from the ACDP, Kaizer Eric Junior Nkabinde from the ANC, Siphesihle Emmanuel Jobe from ATM, Nicole Jane Bollman from the DA, Sandile Mnukwa from the EFF and Fridgeman Mboneni Jama from the IFP.

The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation.

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 67.13% and the DA candidate won the ward with 77.46% of valid votes.

  • Ward 48 in eThekwini Municipality – ETH will be contested by ten (10) candidates, Moonsamy Govender, an independent candidate, Kishorelall Roopnarain from the ACDP, Phiwinhlanhla Mziki from the ANC, Fikile Eunice Khuzwayo from ATM, Michelle Lutchmen from the DA, Rogers Naidoofrom from the Democratic Liberal Congress (DLC), Hlengiwe Samkelisiwe Mahlobo from the EFF, Alisha Rabbipal from the IFP, Mannie Roy Moonsamy from the Minorities of South Africa (MSA) and Rivaaj Ramdas from Minority Front (MF).

The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 57.79% and the DA candidate won the ward with 56.09% of valid votes.

  • Ward 28 in Msunduzi Municipality – KZN225 will be contested by four (4) candidates Parusha Chetty from the ANC, Magalingam Naicker from the DA, Lungisani Zondi from the EFF and Sirsing Singh from Minority Front (MF).

The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s membership being terminated from the political party 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 60.95% and the DA candidate won the ward with 73.66% of valid votes.

  • Ward 30 in Msunduzi Municipality – KZN225 will be contested by six (6) candidates  Jaiheen Singh, an independent candidate, Shunmoogam Naidoo from the ANC, Rikesh Ishwarlall from the DA, Sthandwa Freedom Ngcobo from the EFF,  Zwelihle Majola from the IFP and Angeline Bhikshu from the MF.

The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s membership being terminated from the political party 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 65.11% and the DA candidate won the ward with 55.18% of valid votes.

  • Ward 02 in Maphumulo Municipality – KZN294 will be contested by three (3) candidates,  Bhekinkosi Enock Ngidi from the ANC, Fisokwakhe Sbongeni Mbuyisa from the EFF and Msawenkosi Lindokuhle Ngidi from the IFP.

The ward was previously represented by the IFP and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s death. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 63.25% and the IFP candidate won the ward with 63.82% of valid votes.

  • Ward 09 in the Greater Kokstad Municipality – KZN433 will be contested by three (3) candidates, Nomsa Margaret Mayeza from the ANC, Lindani Zungula from the EFF and Thulani Nicholas Khomo from the IFP.

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s death. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 60.40% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 64.05% of valid votes.

In Limpopo:

  • Ward 04 in Modimolle-Mookgophong Municipality – LIM368 will be contested by four (4) candidates, Tebogo Lucky Machebele from the ACDP, Dimakatso Elvis Ramogale from the ANC, Elizabeth Sibongile Seolela from the EFF and Mmapula Briggette Matsiu from the Mookgophong Party.

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 56.85% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 61.65% of valid votes.

In Mpumalanga:

  • Ward 12 in Msukaligwa Municipality – MP302 will be contested by two (2) candidates, Mxolisi Sibeko from the ANC and Vincent Muzi Shongwe from the EFF.

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s death. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 61.47% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 71.66% of valid votes.

  • Ward 15 in Emalahleni Municipality – MP312 will be contested by two (2) candidates, Thulisile Doreen Malahle from the ANC and Dorcas Phaswane Mpfiri from the EFF,

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 46.20% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 67.40% of valid votes.

  • Ward 29 in Emalahleni Municipality – MP312 will be contested by four (4) candidates, Bafana Timothy Lukhele, an independent candidate, Magashe David Mmargetloa from the ANC, Petros Mahleza Mkhabela from the EFF and Willem Johannes Swanepoel from the FF+.

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 51.72% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 74.76% of valid votes.

  • Ward 02 in the City of Mbombela Municipality – MP326 will be contested by two (2) candidates, Jabulani Jackson Mhlangafrom the ANC and Sifiso Masosota Gumede from the EFF

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 61.63% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 84.53% of valid votes.

  • Ward 30 in the City of Mbombela Municipality – MP326 will be contested by four (4) candidates, Susarah Cornelia Mouton from the ACDP, Mashila Elliot Matsebula from the ANC, Rowan Torr from the DA and Mfundo Churchill Mathebula from the EFF.

The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 63.04% and the DA candidate won the ward with 70.32% of valid votes.

In the North West:

  • Ward 16 in Rustenburg Municipality – NW373 will be contested by three (3) candidates, Botshelo Ishmael Mpete from the ANC, Johan Cornel Cronje from the DA and Ralepeetsa Levy Ramagogodi from the EFF

The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 59.47% and the DA candidate won the ward with 58.99% of valid votes.

  • Ward 26 in Rustenburg Municipality – NW373 will be contested by three (3) candidates, Dannyboy Dikutle, an independent candidate, Hendrick Baleseng Mogotsi from the ANC and Kagiso Gabriel Seabelo from the EFF

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s death. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 56.67% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 67.78% of valid votes.

In the Northern Cape:

  • Ward 05 in Hantam Municipality – NC065 will be contested by three (3) candidates, Jacques Hermanus Nicolaas Klaaste from the ANC, Johannes Jacobus Opperman from the DA and Linda Adonis from the EFF

The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 67.69% and the DA candidate won the ward with 46.38% of valid votes.
