The service delivery campaign of government under the Operation Sukuma Sakhe in eThekwini, led by Champion HOD, Magagula and Champion Mayor, Nxumalo, targeted learners in Ntshongweni and kwaNdengezi areas with school uniforms and shoes today.
A total of 50 pairs of school shoes, bought by Provincial Treasury, were donated to learners of Wozamoya High school, ward 7, in Ntshongweni while 55 school uniforms were donated to learners of Wili Wili Primary schools in the outskirts of kwaNdengezi township today.
Speaking during the handover, Magagula said, the Operation Sukuma Sakhe campaign is meant to benefit poor communities all over the province.
“As the HOD Champion of eThekwini, accompanied by the Mayor, we are ensuring that the country’s focus on improving education and in particular the lives of the poor communities. What we are doing today is a sign that this government wants to do all it can, with the resources it has, to assist learners that come from poor families. We need them to focus on their studies and not be distracted by school necessities that they do not have,” he said.
Magagula said the service delivery campaign does not end with the two schools visited, but it will continue and cover many schools.
Nxumalo said the ANC government made a decision to prioritise education in South Africa and that their visit to schools today was part of that commitment.
“We want to assist learners that do not have school uniform so that they can focus on studying. After this level, we want them to progress to tertiary institutions and then afterwards make a contribution in making life in our communities better,” he said.
