Greytown stable again, MEC praises police for diligence

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu has commended the South African Police Service (SAPS) for the high work rate in diffusing political intolerance in the Greytown area.

Mchunu was speaking at the high-level briefing with the province’s top police brass. During the briefing, it emerged that several arrests have been made and the area is now stabilised. The briefing comes days before Greytown is poised to go into the by-elections planned for 12 August 2009.

As a precautionary measure, a request has been made for the South African National Defence deployment to beef up the existing police units. “I am very pleased with the progress your teams have made in Greytown. Well done!” Mchunu said. However, he cautioned the police not to rest until all suspects are safely behind bars.

He added: “I remain extremely concerned with the high levels of contact crimes. However, pleased that the police have identified all hotspots. We will announce special measures to deal head-on with these hotspots. Our people expect no less.”

Mchunu also asked the provincial commissioner and his team to arrange a special briefing for him in respect of their detective and intelligence plans and capacity. “I am certain that we will win the war on crime, if we strengthen the capabilities of our crime intelligence as well as detective work.”
