Government on drought situation in KwaZulu-Natal

KZN Drought Interventions

Government convened a high level meeting with key water stakeholders on the 14th July 2015, with the aim of coming up with possible solutions to the drought that is affecting the KwaZulu-Natal Province.

The meeting was chaired by the National Minister for Water and Sanitation, Ms Nomvula Mokonyane accompanied by Premier Senzo Mchunu, Cooperative Governance and Traditional affairs MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube discussed the drought interventions in the province during the Inter Ministerial committee on drought meeting said that she was in the province to assess the situation in our so that short, medium and long term solutions can be found.

The meeting was attended by the Mayors, provincial disaster management team, water board members engineers and other senior government officials.

Water shortage has reached crisis levels in the province of KwaZulu-Natal. Water schemes have collapsed and dams have low water levels. Water rationing programmes are already in place. This as ILembe, uThungulu and some areas in Durban are hardest hit by the drought.

The province of KwaZulu-Natal has received a R352 million as a relief aid to address water shortage.

Minister Mokonyane will on the 15th July lead a prayer for rain at Hazelmere, this after the Government delegation had conducted public interactions with communities at Ballito, oThongathi and then Hazelmere Dam to preach the gospel of saving water because every drop counts.
