From Thursday, 10 September 2026, Chairperson of the Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on e-Government & Research Development Committee, Honourable Mbali Hlophe, will lead the Committee as it undertakes a series of oversight visits to health facilities in the province. Starting at the Heidelberg Hospital in Sedibeng and Pholosong Hospital in Ekurhuleni, the visits intend to assess the state of ICT infrastructure supporting digital health systems.
The visit follows engagements with the Gauteng departments of Health and e-Government, during which the Committee identified concerns regarding ICT infrastructure reliability, network capacity, maintenance challenges, and the impact of ICT infrastructure on healthcare service delivery.
Arising from these concerns, the Committee resolved to deepen its oversight of how investment in ICT infrastructure is supporting the digitisation and modernisation of healthcare in the province, with particular focus on the Health Patient Record System (HPRS) and the Integrated Patient Queue Management System (IPQMS).
Among the issues the Committee will be probing during the visit are:
• Inadequate network reliability, maintenance and support at health facilities;
• Insufficient network capacity to support data-intensive applications and poor Wi-Fi connectivity;
• Inadequate funding for infrastructure upgrades; and
• Non-compliance with Medical-Grade Network standards, including the use of non-certified equipment and installers.
The visit forms part of a phased programme of oversight visits to health facilities across the province and will be followed by a Committee meeting on Thursday, 17 September 2026, at which the departments of Health and e-Government will present on the implementation, progress and challenges of the province’s digital health initiatives.
