Gauteng Government urges youth to register before election date is published in Government Gazette

Gauteng Executive council urges young people to register to vote

The Gauteng Executive Council has called on young people who have not yet registered to vote in the upcoming 7 May national and provincial general elections, to do so before the date is published in the Government Gazette.

The weekend of 8 to 9 February 2014 was the last registration weekend. However, voter registration will continue until the date of the official proclamation of the election by the President and the Premiers, towards the end of the month.

"Registration remains open to eligible voters until 5pm on the day of proclamation, which is expected to be later this month," noted Premier Nomvula Mokonyane in her opening remarks during the cabinet meeting held on Wednesday, 12 February 2013.

Eligible voters can still register at their local Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) office until that day, after which the voters' roll closes. Contact details for IEC offices are available on www.elections.org.za or call 0800 11 8000.

The EXCO emphasised that potential voters must make an appointment to apply for registration at their local IEC office during office hours. They must always phone first to make an appointment.

Mokonyane further said as part of the build-up activities to the elections, the provincial government would embark on a voter education drive in April. The education drive will include on-the-ground campaigns with communities, partners and strategic stakeholders to promote and increase knowledge and understanding of the 2014 elections.

Voters who registered this past weekend can check their new registration details from Monday next week by SMSing their ID number to 32810.
