Four people killed on KwaZulu-Natal roads this weekend

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu strongly condemns the number of deaths on KwaZulu-Natal roads over the weekend. Four people lost their lives in road accidents this weekend, due to human error and driver negligence.

In Cato Ridge near Engen, a Corsa bakkie was travelling towards Durban when the driver lost control and went across north bound, colliding into a truck. One person died. In Port Shepstone, Watterson Street a minibus rear-ended a truck and went under it. Nine people sustained minor injuries and six were treated for shock. In a separate accident in the Estcourt area on the R103 old main road, one light motor vehicle lost control and overturned. Five people were critically injured were taken to Escourt Hospital.

In Greytown area P162 on the Qhudeni Nkandla road a light delivery vehicle lost control and overturned due to the brake failure. Three people died and one survived with serious injuries and was taken to Ntunjambili Hospital. On the N2 north bound Sunningdale a light motor vehicle lost control and collided with another vehicle travelling south bound. One person sustained minor injuries and the other person was treated for shock.

At a road block that was held yesterday, 26 September 2009 at uMdloti, M4 Virginia, Durban North 20 people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, 24 warrants and 42 summons were issued, and in total 107 written charges were made. The MEC has expressed his disappointment with those road users who do not obey the rules of road and by so doing put the lives of other road users in jeopardy.

However the ministry is pleased with the decreased number of road accidents on the KwaZulu-Natal roads and the visible policing by the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) will continue. “I am warning all motorists that negligence will not be tolerated on our roads. All those who break the rules of the road will face the full might of the law,” said Mchunu.
