Finance MEC brings hope to rural learners

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Finance, Ms Ina Cronjé today brought hope to hundreds of learners at Zola Primary School in Wembezi Township outside Estcourt, when she made a donation of computers to the school.

MEC Cronjé, who was accompanied by Education MEC Senzo Mchunu, said the donation was her small contribution to improving the school's learners. She explained that she was approached by School Governing Body chairman, Mr David Banda, who cornered her at a meeting.

"I made a promise to him that I will see what I can do, but frankly, I did not know what I was going to do. With the help of the department's management, we were able to find 10 computers within the department," said MEC Cronjé.

She said this donation is motivated by her belief that children from outlying and rural schools should not be disadvantaged on the basis of where they are from, but should also get quality education.

MEC Mchunu said the donation of the 10 computers was not a small token, but a big contribution in improving the lives of the learners, which comes from the heart.

"This gift comes from the realization that education is nothing without technology," said Mchunu, adding that government has pledged to provide quality education in the current administration's five-year term.

"There are problems, however, that we are faced with, the major one being that we cannot advance the quality of life for our learners without technology."

The school's acting principal, Mrs Thenjiwe Zondo expressed gratitude to MEC Cronjé, and pledged that the school will ensure the safety of the computers.
