Ezemvelo KwaZulu-Natal Wildlife bids farewell to the outgoing board members at Riverside Hotel in Durban last night, 19 February 2010. The outgoing board members whose term of office came to an end on 31 January 2010, served for two terms since their appointment on 1 February 2004.
The outgoing acting chairperson of the board Mr Philani Shangase gave a synopsis of what characterised their tenure from the challenges that prevailed to their successes. He highlighted the smooth restructuring and transformation process which the outgoing board implemented during its tenure, which preceded the amalgamation of the erstwhile Natal Parks Board and the then KwaZulu Department of Nature Resources.
Chairperson of the incoming board Mr Comfort Ngidi profusely thanked the old board for laying a good foundation and was quick to give a glimpse of what the new board has in store.
“We want to bolster the image of Ezemvelo KwaZulu-Natal Wildlife by increasing its visibility in public and ensuring that it becomes a more financially sustainable public entity” said Ngidi.
Chairperson of the Conservation and Environmental Affairs Portfolio Committee Mr Omie Singh who spoke on behalf of the MEC for Agriculture Environmental Affairs and Rural Development gave a profound speech with much appreciation of the sacrifices the outgoing board members had made.
He cited the achievement that Ezemvelo KwaZulu-Natal Wildlife now had a visible footprint in the rural areas of the province, as numerous other tasks outside of the core function of the organisation had been performed such as the building of crèches and classrooms for the upliftment of the local under privileged communities.
He further urged the incoming board to build on the good work performed by the outgoing board.
“The foundation is already there, all that remains for the new board is to take this organisation to greater heights” said Singh.
Chief Executive Officer of Ezemvelo KwaZulu-Natal Wildlife, Dr Bandile Mkhize extended a warm welcome to the new board members and gave assurance of his unwavering support on behalf of all the staff members of Ezemvelo KwaZulu-Natal Wildlife.
The farewell was attended by various stakeholders including members of the Conservation and Environmental Affairs Portfolio Committee led by its chairperson Mr Omie Singh.
