eThekwini Operation Sukuma Sakhe: Nelson Mandela Day at Duze Primary School

As part of the eThekwini Operation Sukuma Sakhe Programme, a decision was taken to celebrate Nelson Mandela Day on 18 July 2013, doing something for and with the school children of Duze Primary school in ward 100, in the rural Mbumbulu area, near Pietermaritzburg.

Most of the learners attending this school are from very poor backgrounds, and access to the school is difficult due to about 99 percent of the road within ward 100 being dirt road. The infrastructure of the school is also not up to standard.

As part of the celebrations, government departments presented sustainable interventions to address poverty and underdevelopment in Duze Primary, including health screening and an assessment of the refurbishment requirements of the school.

The MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Ms Nomusa Dube, assisted with the painting of the school.
