Electoral Commission on parties facing deregistration

138 political parties face deregistration

In terms of Section 15(6) of the Electoral Act, read with Regulation 10 of the Regulations for the Registration of Parties 2004, a party that is not represented in any sphere of government must renew their registration before the last day of January of every year.

Of the 450 political parties currently registered, 93 are represented in the national, provincial or a municipal legislature. A further 219 parties have either contested an election in the past two years, are recent registrations or informed the Commission of their intention to renewed their registration by the due date.

The Electoral Commission has sent letters and SMS messages to the remaining 138 registered parties notifying them to submit a letter requesting renewal by 31 March 2020 or be deregistered. A list of these parties is attached.

A final list of parties being deregistered will be published in the Government Gazette in April.

Parties wishing to renew their registration must confirm this in writing to The Chief Electoral Officer. Letters can be submitted to molefekj@elections.org.za, simelanek@elections.org.za or mushwanea@elections.org.za and marked for the attention of the Party Liaison Directorate.
