Candidates contesting Municipal By-elections on 28 June 2023
Ten (10) municipal ward by-elections will take place in the Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and the Western Cape provinces on Wednesday, 28 June 2023.
These by-elections will affect nearly 100 000 (99 711) registered voters.
The by-elections will be contested by five (5) independent candidates and 54 candidates from eighteen (18) political parties as follows:
In Gauteng
- Ward 07 in the City of Johannesburg Municipality – JHB, will be contested by one independent candidate, Amelia Ann Naude and eight political party candidates: 1. Luvuyo Kamba of ActionSA, 2. Sipho Maxin Lukhele of the African National Congress (ANC); 3. Mxolisi Vuma of Al Jama-Ah (ALJAMA); 4. Theophilus Emanuel Louw of the Amalgamated Rainbow Movement (ATM); 5. Randell Markgraaff of the Democratic Alliance (DA);Thabiso Godfrey Thuputlela of the Freedom Economic Fighters (EFF);
7. Royston Wynston Williams of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP); and 8. Lois Cathleen Simonse of the Patriotic Alliance (PA).
The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 49,73%.
- Ward 83 in the City of Tshwane Municipality – TSH will be contested by seven candidates: 1. Anastasia Elsie Ursula Sekole of the ANC; 2. Andrew Lesch of the DA; 3. Axole Lerato Nomqonde of the EFF; 4. Eon De Koker of Republic Conference of Tshwane 4. Margaux Overbeek of the Organic Humanity Movement; 5. Yusuf Cassim Young of the Organic Humanity Movement (OHM); and 7. Llewellyn George Reinecke of the Vryheidsfront Plus (FFPlus).
The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 59,80%.
In KwaZulu-Natal
- Ward 11 in the EThekwini Municipality – ETH, will be contested by six candidates. 1. Nabila Hoshe of the Africa Restoration Alliance; 2. Nicholas Richard Johnson of the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP); 3. Muziwenkosi Ntombela of the ANC,
4. Allan Eugene Peterson of the DA; 5. Mfundo Mpumelelo Mcanyana of the EFF; and 6. Laurell Jones of the PA.
The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 38,95%.
- Ward 05 in the iNkosi Langalibalele Municipality – KZN237, will be contested by one independent candidate, Cyril Vusimzi Mkhize and five other candidates: 1. Daglous Sibusiso Shabalala of the ANC; 2. Phakamani Vincent Mpembe of the EFF; 3. George Delane Khanyile of the IFP and 4. Richman Mbusokawufani Nyathi of the United Cultural Movement (UCM).
The ward was previously represented by the IFP and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s membership being terminated by the party. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 54,50%.
The ward was previously represented by the IFP and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s membership being terminated by the party. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 56,25%.
- Ward 21 in the iNkosi Langalibalele Municipality – KZN237 will be contested by four candidates: 1. Siphelele Mbatha of the ANC; 2. Sibonga Quintin Mntabo of the EFF; 3. Sandile Buthelezi of the IFP; and 4. Bongumusa Howard Mhlongo of the UCM.
The ward was previously represented by the IFP and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s membership being terminated by the party. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 65,05%.
- Ward 29 in the Alfred Duma Municipality – KZN238 will be contested by one independent candidate, Phasika Nsele; and four other candidates: 1. Mxolisi Innocent Mkhonto of the ANC. 2. Velaphi Madondo of the EFF, 3. Bongani Nicholas Madondo of the IFP; and 4. Nkosiyazi Cyril Mkhize of the UCM.
The ward was previously represented by the IFP and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s membership being terminated by the party. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 65,09%.
In Mpumalanga
- Ward 12 in the Mkhondo Municipality – MP303 will be contested by one independent candidate, Sphelo Mncube and three other candidates: 1. Muzi Romeo Qedusizi Mhlanga of the ANC; 2. Siyabonga Sanele Archibald Mthethwa of the EFF; and
3. Siphiwe Khanyisile Mavimbela of the IFP.
The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s death. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 44,48%.
- Ward 14 in the Steven Tshwete Municipality – MP313 will be contested by four candidates: 1. Mahmood Akhalwaya of the ANC; 2. Elsie Wilhelmiena Vermooten of the DA, 3. Ntombizodwa Johanna Mthobeni of the EFF and 4. Marthinus Van Der Merwe of the Middleburg and Hendrina Residents Front.
The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 58,98%.
In Western Cape
- Ward 107 in the City of Cape Town Municipality - CPT will be contested by five candidates: 1. Buntu Gwija of the ANC; 2. Debbie Arnelda Campbell of the Cape Independence Party, 3. Jonathan Scott Mills of the DA; 4. Cameron Michael Summers
of the EFF; and 5. Khotso Lebakeng of The Organic Humanity Movement.
The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 55,04%.
Kindly note that all voting stations will open from 7am – 9pm on voting day except for the Alfred Duma Municipality where voting stations will open from 7am - 7pm.
