The Electoral Commission welcomes the premiere of Beats for My Peeps, a 10-episode electoral education television programme airing on SABC 1 from today.
The programme forms part of the Commission’s broader voter education and democracy participation campaign aimed at encouraging young South Africans to actively engage in the country’s democratic processes ahead of the 2026 Local Government Elections on 04 November 2026.
Targeted primarily at young voters, Beats for My Peeps uses music, popular culture, dialogue and real-life experiences to demystify elections, promote democratic values and encourage informed participation in local government elections.
The programme, commissioned and funded by the IEC, seeks to empower young people with knowledge about their electoral rights and responsibilities while highlighting the importance of their voices in shaping the future of their communities.
Through innovative and relatable content, the programme aims to bridge information gaps, stimulate civic engagement and foster a culture of active citizenship among first-time voters and young adults.
“The launch of Beats for My Peeps forms part of a wider effort by the Electoral Commission to make electoral information accessible, relevant and engaging for younger audiences. By meeting young people where they are and speaking in a language and format that resonates with them, the programme seeks to strengthen democratic participation and encourage a new generation of active citizens,” Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo said.
The Commission encourages viewers across the country to tune in to Beats for My Peeps on SABC 1 at 18:00 and join the national conversation on democracy, citizenship and the power of voting.
The show marks the Commission’s commitment to meet civic and democracy education and engaging young people in a language and idiom they were most familiar with,” said Ms Moagisi Letlhaku, the IEC General Manager for Civic and Democracy Education and Research.
“We are excited to launch the show. To us, this is more than just entertainment. As a commission we are concerned about the participation of young people in electoral matters and this investment is part of our contribution to help address this growing challenge,” said Ms Letlhaku.
Beats for my Peeps premieres 17 days before the launch of the voter registration weekend of 20 and 21 June, 2026.
Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission further encourages all eligible young South Africans to take the first step towards participation by registering to vote and ensuring that their registration details are up to date. Registration can be completed anytime, anywhere through the Commission’s online voter registration portal at registertovote.elections.org.za.
