KZN Department of Transport lead by MEC Willies Mchunu made a major announcement which will enhance service delivery and effective renewal of motor licenses in KwaZulu-Natal.
Mchunu today announced the new approach and adjustments in renewing motor licenses which will ease the burden to motorists by reducing costs in renewing motor licenses.
Before, motorists were compelled to renew their vehicles at the initial registering authority. Motorists were forced to travel long hours and in some instances miss renewal dates.
There are 82 Registered Authorities in KwaZulu-Natal, comprising of 41 Municipal Offices, 34 Post Offices and seven Provincial Offices who performs motor registration and licensing functions.
The option to renew KwaZulu-Natal licenses at any KwaZulu-Natal Registering authority came about as a result of the recent review of Agency Agreements.
Numerous public requests to renew motor licenses in this manner were also considered. Now, all that is history as Mchunu announced a new plan that will see motorists renewing their vehicle licenses at their nearest registering Authority.
It is envisaged that through this exercise government will reduce unlicensed vehicles roaming the road. This new system came into effect on the first of January 2013 and is now in full implementation.
However, the option to renew KwaZulu-Natal registered motor vehicle licenses at any KwaZulu-Natal Registering Authority does not apply to the Choice Number Registering Authority (personalized number plates).
Mchunu said this will help in eliminating unregistered vehicles on KZN roads. “With these new adjustments we hope to drastically reduce and ultimately eliminate the number of unlicensed vehicles that roam our public roads. I have no doubt this will improve the level service delivery we render to the people of KwaZulu-Natal thus reducing burdens including costs of renewing motor licenses. With these developments there is therefore no excuse for any unlicensed vehicle. I will therefore encourage motorist to take advantage of this service,” said Mchunu.
Meanwhile Mchunu announced the approval of the new number plate for KwaDukuza municipal vehicles. The municipality fleet will be changed from NT to KwaDukuza Municipality (KDM).
