The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) is deeply saddened by the untimely passing of Dr Desmond D’Sa, founder of the South Durban Community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA), his son, Rodney D’Sa, and his sister-in-law in a car accident that occurred earlier today.
"We wish to express our deepest condolences to the D’Sa family, friends, colleagues and the South Durban community," said Deputy Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Narend Singh.
Dr Desmond D’Sa was a dedicated environmental advocate and activist who stood against industrial pollution and held industries accountable for activities that placed the health of surrounding communities at risk. His commitment to environmental justice helped amplify the voices of communities affected by pollution.
Through the SDCEA, Dr D’Sa represented the South Durban community and championed its right to a clean and healthy environment. His work made a significant contribution to environmental advocacy and the protection of communities.
"The loss of Dr D’Sa is a great loss for the entire environmental movement. His dedication to defending communities and environmental justice will live on," added Deputy Minister Singh.
The Department extends its sincere condolences to the D’Sa family, the SDCEA, colleagues and all those affected by this tragic loss.
May Dr Desmond D’Sa, Rodney D’Sa and their family member rest in peace.
